The comeback of Blink-182 has been a long time coming now. Although some fans lost hope after Tom Delonge exited the band last year, but Blink ended up prevailing with the release of their successful album California, which was Matt Skiba’s debut with the band. The culmination of all of this was a sold out headline arena and amphitheater tour with A Day To Remember and All Time Low, two of the biggest bands in the modern pop punk scene. What followed was one of the most memorable night for every pop punk fan in attendance. Check out some photos of the show!

Hawthorne Heights

Anyone that knows me knows I have an extreme pride in my hometown music community. The hardworking individuals that make up the Southern New Jersey scene continue to demonstrate their passion and dedication to music, good times, and professionalism. This mentality has rarely faltered. The 2016 Pinelands Music Festival can serve as a great testament to that statement. After many months of detailed preparation, Pinelands Music Festival opened the gates to their second annual musical showcase and celebration on October 9 2016. Featured bands on this line up included post-hardcore emo veterans Hawthorne Heights along with national touring bands like Hidden In Plain View, Prawn, Head North, ‘68, and more. Also joining the bill were many native NJ bands like Pines, Sleep In., Better Machines, and Good Look, Sigourney.

The day had begun with steady rainfall coating the grounds in Millville, NJ where the festival was held. By the grace of Valhallen however, the rain had cleared by the time ticket holders arrived at the festival. Two stages were erected to showcase the main attractions of the day. The Grandaire Stage featured the best in the local touring circuit while the Pinelands Stage housed the larger national acts. Spread across the estate were various food trucks, several sponsored booths displaying worthwhile products, charities, clothing, and a quaint beer garden. Bands merchandise was lined directly outside the Grandaire Stage and access to restrooms was placed beside the Pinelands Stage.

While I could write about the amazing performances each band had given, I believe more credit is due to the long unwavering dedication to music the members of the locals bands possesses. Millville, NJ is by far not a notable location on any map unless you’re a member of law enforcement. With that being said, organizers of this event stood tall and proud, calling upon the local community to put together this large scale musical ruckus. To speak more candidly, SHIT HOMIE, HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS, SLEEPWAVE, AND ‘68 IN SOUTH JERSEY? It takes a lot of confidence to approach established headliners in order to ask participation in a budding music festival. Yet through the direct involvement of the local supportive community, another year had closed on a high note.

With all this being said, there is room for improvement. This festival was a complete treat for those in attendance, although it was not perfect. Within any sector of entertainment, there is no such thing as “perfection”. But there was an apparent lack of a consistent crew on the Pinelands Stage, murmurings within different camps of different hurdles those involved with the festival had to jump over, and varying degrees of professionalism that were displayed on and off festival grounds. Aside from these minor kinks, the festival was still an incredible spectacle of performance and music.

For it’s second year, Pinelands Music Festival killed it. It reminded me that above all else, music rocks. It brings people together to experience music, not just listen and soak in. It’s the most explosive creative outlet to artists, it’s soul-touching for audience members, it’s life long memories for all involved. There is still plenty of room for improvement on the organizers end, but I’ll attend every year looking forward to their progression.

Parkway Drive
« 3 of 44 »

For years Parkway Drive has brought together an array of people to their shows. Individuals with their own unique backgrounds with one main thing in common, a love for the post hardcore genre. Joining Parkway Drive on this tour were Polarity, Counterparts and We Came As Romans.

One of the toughest things bout being a lesser known opening act is having to deal with a smaller crowd. This was a challenge, of many, for Polarity. When people in the crowd don’t really know you or [more importantly] your music, it can be difficult to get the reaction you are looking for. In a venue that can hold over 2,000 people with barely 100 bodies watching your opening set, it can be discouraging. However, that didn’t stop the guys of Polarity from enjoying their set. Aside from the basic numbers game amongst the crowd, the biggest challenge Polarity has is setting themselves apart from the rest. While their sound is solid, they become a carbon copy amongst the masses which ultimately makes them quite a forgettable act.

As the crowd filled in, it became apparent as to why; Counterparts has quite the following, and for good reason. While, yes, some can say they too have a similar sound to many musicians, it’s the lyrics mixed with the on stage energy that keeps people excited. I can’t say I would ever play a Counterparts’s album on repeat but I could watch them live for hours on end. Counterparts is one of those bands you may not get excited about on a recorded track but their live sets is where they really pull you in.

One of the most well known openers [band in general] had one of the most intense crowds. We Came As Romans conquered yet another killer set. When they first came out I couldn’t help but feel like something was missing. One of the unique things bout WCAR is their use of 2 different vocalists; yet one seemed to be missing [Kyle Pavone]. Nearly finished with the first song and still no sign of Kyle, I was starting to became sadden by the realization [as I’m sure others in the room were as well] that he and WCAR could have parted ways. I was just about to stop my wishful thinking when Mr. Pavone graces us with his vocal presence. At that point the whole room lost their damn mind. David Stephens gave some words of advice as an intro to one of their last songs in the set, “Past, Present, Future”; “”If you truly wanna do something if you truly believe in something don’t listen to the nay Sayers. This song is all bout that.”

With WCAR ending their set on a positive (as if there’s another way to end it), it was time for Parkway Drive. Anyone who has ever seen Parkway Drive before knows they are in for a killer show. What’s makes PD such a joy to watch is that they embrace their music to such an extend that their lyrics come alive with their movements. They each have their own musical persona that connect in such a way on stage that it becomes theatrical in the best possible way. When each member “breaks character” and cracks a smile or shows their genuine appreciation to the crowd it shows them in a different light. For me, those moments take the performance to a deeper level. In these moments we [as fans] are able to connect with these musicians we idolize, as humans who know that in an instant this can all vanish. So it’s important to take advantage of the here and now.

It’s no secret that when Parkway Drive comes to town, the crowd is going to be nuts. With New York City being a “must hit” for nearly ever tour they have; lead singer, (Winston McCall), made it a point to mention, “We didn’t wanna give u the same set twice. We’ll give you something new, something old and something vintage.”

Even though the show wasn’t sold out, that never makes a difference at a Parkway Drive Show. The room is always filled with an array of positive emotions and energy which makes Parkway Drive an unforgettable act every time.

Step one of this is a 10 year tour for possibly their most beloved album “The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me” with popular scene acts The Front Bottoms and Modern Baseball joining for the ride. It’s truly one of the most emo tours that someone can think of, the fact its even happening is a pop punk kid’s wet dream. 2016 is having an identity crisis. Good Charlotte has come out with a new album and has been actively touring, simple plan is on tour, trip pants are making a comeback & now sum 41 is on tour with senses fail. What the hell year is it? As It Is, Senses Fail & Sum 41 teamed up to venture on the “Don’t Call It A Sum Back” Tour.
Back in the “Emo Music years”, Senses Fail was one of the more well-known and sought after bands. Now, years after people’s emo phase, that desire to be front and center of Buddy & the guys is still stronger than ever. For those who have never seen Senses Fail live, go. Go and experience the majestic-ness that is Buddy. Go and experience Cha-Cha dance moves, cartwheels and knee slides that are Senses Fail. One of the best things about seeing a band like Senses Fail [who have been in the music business for years] is that they don’t have to follow the classic “rules” of performing on stage. They get to hype up the crowd how they deem fit without having to worry about impressing a record label. Senses Fail are a prime example of a band who wants nothing more than to perform music they’ve put their all into and put on a memorable show for fans. They will be setting out on their own 10-year tour in 2017 so be sure to catch the wonder that is Senses Fail.

Though Sum 41 announced in late 2012 that they would be taking a break from touring to work on new music new music in 2013, fans were left to wonder what would become of the band when founding member, [drummer] Steve Jocz, announced his departure from the band that same year [2013]. With not much sight of a new album in 2014, fans were becoming restless. To add to the concerns, the health of frontman, Derek Whibley, became public knowledge and were now the main focus of fans. Though Derek promised he had some ideas for new music and that the band would begin working on the album soon, fans were much more focused on making sure Derek made a full recovery. As Derek regained his strength, he made good on his word; in Oct of this year, Sum 41 made their comeback with their 6th studio album, 13 Voices. The album itself had mixed reviews, but that didn’t stop diehard (and new) Sum fans from playing it on repeat.

Sum 41 made 2016 a “Sum back” year, not only with the new album coming out later in the year but also with taking on Warped Tour and finally a proper fall tour. Sum 41 is the type of band that shows their appreciation to those that have given them the career they have today, whether it be fans or those involved in the music industry. Regardless of who’s in the audience, they do everything they can to ensure it’s an unforgettable show. One of these unforgettable moments included Derek doing a wicked guitar solo during their song Underclass Hero, then calling on a fan in the crowd who claimed to play the guitar and brought him up on stage to show his skill (i.e. the fan killed it). Playing both new and old material, the sold out crowd went nuts for all of it.

Even though 2016 presented hardships for many, Sum 41 coming back into our music lives eases the pains of 2016. Now as we approach the new year, we hope for new music and new tours with these music legends.

With EDM quickly taking over the music scene it should come as no surprise that one of NYC’s favorite concert hot spots would host some of EDM’s rising stars. On January 27th 2017, DATSIK brought his Ninja Nation tour to the Playstation Theater and it brought out the head-banger army.

First up to the stage was an up and comer from the genre, Virtual Riot. When he started his set there was nothing virtual about him or his performance, the place went crazy. You can tell watching this guy that he really loves doing this. His passion came out with his unbelievable energy that fueled such an intense crowd.

Next up was Crizzly; now I don’t know much about this artist but they were genuinely fun. They were incredibly interactive with the crowd, jumping into the crowd, dancing in middle of the floor and letting everyone feel like they were truly apart of the show.

The special guest for the night was Doctor P. Another artist I wasn’t fully aware of but he was a pleasant surprise. He brought a unique vibe to a genre that is so easy to fall into the shadows of your counterparts. Whether the crowd was familiar with Doctor P or not, you couldn’t tell. Which, quite honestly, makes you a successor as an opening artist.

Finally, the reason we were all here, DATSIK, and his relive of his new Shogun stage in support of his latest EP, Sansei. The stage was set up in that of a Japanese style house. Playing everything from dub-step to Lean on Me and everything in between. If you ever have a chance to catch this tour in a city near you or even DATSIK live, do it. The EDM world is one of the fastest growing in the music industry. With so many similar acts it’s refreshing to enjoy those who make it a point to have their own unique style that can’t be missed. Loose your mind and soak in the light show; it will be an experience you never forget.

The openers chosen for this tour were honestly phenomenal. I have missed Tiny Moving Parts every time they were in town, so I was extremely stoked to hear that they were a part of this tour. And man oh man they went off as soon as the opening note went off. Dylan, the lead singer, was unstoppable as he jumped around the stage, taking a break now and then to shred a twinkly riff. Although they’ve been increasingly getting the attention they deserve, they are still somewhat underrated. Those who don’t know them are missing out on such good honest and emotional music that is delivered in such a beautiful manner, especially live. But I was very happy to see that quite a few people in the crowd knew them, singing the words right back at the band.

When Babetalk’s 2016 Mid Album of the Year List came out, Trash Boat’s Nothing I Write You Can Change What You’ve Been Through was my number one album. Their performance the night of this show just proved that they are totally worth of that. They truly put themselves on the map with this album which happens to feature Dan Campbell of The Wonder Years. They set started off with a strong dose of fast-paced pop-punk which continued all the way through to the end. Trash Boat’s moody lyrics backed up by smooth riffs and thundering drumming shows that they have earned a spot on the steadily growing stage of the pop-punk scene.

This has been a show I’ve been waiting to go to since attending The Wonder Years’ fall tour back home. The Wonder Years is one of my favorite bands, I’ve now seen them six times, and they just get better every time I see them. They had a great set list prepared, opening with the fan favorite “Local Man Ruins Everything” and closing their encore with the iconic “Came Out Swinging.” What I admire the most about The Wonder Years though is the fact that they are literal proof of how important it is to channel and express your grief into something, especially your passions. For those who don’t know their latest album, No Closer to Heaven was heavily influenced by the loss of a close friend. The band is right when they say “the bluest things on earth don’t know shit about the blues,” but their songs, especially off of NCTH will make you feel something. Therefore a show from these pop-punk giants is more of an experience, and that’s what I love so much about them.

Words & Images from guest photographer: Rae Blaiyr

It was a packed evening at the Playstation Theater as fans, both young and old, lined up to see We The Kings on their 10-year anniversary tour. Playing off the trend of nostalgia, there were fans who had been with the band since their hit single ‘Check Yes Juliet’, those who found the band much later, and casual fans looking to rehash the fun of their youth. To go with the evening of fun, the band chose opening acts Astro Lasso and Plaid Brixx to keep fans dancing through the night.

Astro Lasso, a duo of Jordan Davis and Tristan Martin from PA, opened the night with a refreshing bit of indie pop. Danceable and well put together, it was hard to believe it when Davis announced that the band was only a month old. With a great sound and a fantastic response from the crowd, Astro Lasso was a stronger first act than most—holding their own in a high-energy lineup.

The second act, Plaid Brixx, proved to be another small ensemble with a larger-than-life sound. Front-man, Chris Duggan, seemed to be a performer straight out of the 80’s from a theatric nature to his presence on stage. With no shortage of poses and dramatics, Duggan commanded the stage and the attention of the crowd, even at the end of their set—to which he ended with a handstand. The interesting Pop-Rock sound, combined with the trio’s high energy on stage, left the crowd jumping through the set in an incredible wave of ecstasy.

We The Kings had, in my opinion, the funniest of sets I had seen in quite a while. As the voice on the overhead instructed fans to take their clothes off and party, the intro embodied the energy of the crowd and even the good memories associated with their music. Going right into ‘Check Yes Juliet’ the band came out of the gate with a high energy performance that was mirrored by the crowd, who belted every lyric like it was still 2007. Following up with ‘Woah’, the crowd stayed enthusiastic as they sang back the woah-filled chorus to Frontman Travis Clark, who kept the jokes rolling and the energy on stage at a 10. Like perfect bookends, the band ended their set with ‘Check Yes…’ once more—proving how timeless their music is, and how even after 10 years, we still love singing along.

On February 3rd Webster Hall Girls and Boys night had one of EDM Hottest acts hit the stage to bring the roof down with some special friend to help them out

Opening up the night in the Marlin room was the bayside tigers a 90’s cover band who covers song from Blink 182 to Spice Girls to whoever you can think, and I personally love this group always fun and interactive with the crowd

As we make are way to the grand ballroom opening up the main stage was Aries Atlantica as i did not catch his full set the parts of his set i did catch seem this kid has a bright future in this scene

Last but not least to the stage keys n krates playing a rare Dj set. With the new single “Right Here” featuring  Krane just being released they were coming to bring a party and that is just what they did playing everything they could from there song “keep it 100” with grandtheft to there Midnight Mass EP and even further back to Old school fans in the crowd but know matter what these guys always bring an amazing  live show weather they have there instruments or just a turntable

On March 4th Dubstep superstar, Excision brought the powerhouse of lights and sound to the Playstation Theater.

Starting off the night was a microwave that goes by the name barely alive. From the moment he came on the speaker was vibrating like it say in his song Ca$h on his most recent EP release Domain. The energy he brought was perfect for and opening act everyone in the room was dancing and having fun as much as Barely was performing for everyone

Next up was cookie monsta. The only artist on this line up I was not aware of coming out of England. Bring the drop and crazy clowns but was disappointed there were no cookies anywhere but moving on from that I enjoyed what I saw out of his crowd control proving he fits in with the newcomers of the dubstep world

The final act of the night excision brought his world famous Paradox tour back to PlayStation theater for the second year along with the 150,000 watts of sound and the crazy light show and visuals and a dinosaur vaping super clouds on everyone from the moment the curtain dropped everyone’s faces melted and the head banging begins. The bass was so loud it shook some wires loose in the middle of his set stopping the show for a few seconds. If you still having a chance to experience this tour it’s nothing like you will ever experience with a hand full of artist out that still try and make a show as memorable for the fans just as much as the crew and everyone involved

Let’s be honest. Sometimes you go to show only for the headliner. If you went to into this show intending to do that just that, you did not leave the way you came in. You left falling just as in love with the support. All three UK bands brought the heat, giving the fans quite a show.

The Scottish trio The Xcerts took the stage, taking it by storm. Getting the crowd going and off their feet with songs like “Slackerpop.” Even if you didn’t know them, it was hard not to at least bop your head to the catchy “Shaking In The Water.” Their bassist, Jordan Smith, showed off his talent by switching to a keyboard as their set slowed down with coming to a close with “There Is Only You.” Coming straight from their lyrics “if you’ve got something to say then just say it,” I’ll say it: The Xcerts are a band to check out.

With hair almost as beautiful as their music, The Amazons are honestly a hidden gem, and I am so thankful for this tour. They put on a great set mixed with dark riffs and cool vibes; that combined with singers husky voice set the mood. They went off from the first note; The Amazons are truly a force to be reckoned with. I can’t lie, days after the show their songs are still stuck in my head; especially “Little Something” and “In My Mind.”

You Me At Six crowned this tour the biggest headlining tour to date that they have done in Germany. At the Cologne date, the band emphasized on the fact that Cologne was the largest night of the tour so far, sold out, meaning that they expected nothing but the best from the crowd. Fans had their fun; jumping, clapping, dancing, singing and even getting asked to get on someone’s shoulder during No One Does It Better. Birthday bassist, Matt Barnes, had some fun of his own, receiving a lot of love from the fans. The crowd serenaded him with “Happy Birthday,” some fans at the barrier came prepared and held up birthday signs.

It’s no secret that YMAS’ new album, Night People has fans a little torn regarding the new sound, but the crowd did not shy away from the handful of new songs, keeping the energy going. Towards the end of the set, Josh took a moment about to not only sway those still strongly opinionated about it but also to remind the crowd of a valuable lesson. “Take on the World” was introduced as a song Josh Franceschi originally wrote for someone he loves very much, but now has transcended into something bigger. He now sees the song as a call for empathy and understanding, asking the crowd to love people who are different from ourselves; concluding the speech with “love is wise, hate is foolish.” Aside from their newest album YMAS played songs off Cavalier Youth and Sinners Never Sleep. And of course, throwing it back to Hold Me Down for the fan favorites “Underdog” and “Stay With Me.”

Holly Would Surrender practically bleed pop-punk. Repping an “in pizza we trust” shirt, showing off a few tattoos here and there; even one saying “skate fast, die punk,” as well as sporting a backwards snapback. But considering that they have they have an excellent sound and catchy lyrics to back them up; there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. It was quite obvious that the punks, hailing from Hamburg, have already been making a name for themselves. They engaged well with the crowd, got a lot of feedback and singing. Holly Would Surrender has a great stage presence. This is the second German local band I’ve seen during my stay, and I am very impressed with the German scene has to offer. Holly might surrender, but I don’t think this band is anytime soon. With a sound inspired by bands like Blink, they were a fantastic opener for a pop-punk headliner.

Microwave is one of my favorite bands, and one of my favorite bands to see live. Their performance was anything but “Dull,” and that is quite the understatement. Credit has to be given where it is earned, and believe me; these guys deserve every ounce of it. They have risen to the top of the scene quite fast, showcasing their talent, especially with their newest album. Which of course they treated us with, playing a few bangers off of it. From started to finish they played a fast paced setlist; full of emotion, even playing my favorites “Stovall” and “Trash Stains.” There is just something raw and genuine about Microwave’s music. They are the type of band that you can listen to all day without getting tired of them. I would like to take a moment to congratulate Microwave on their first overseas tour, also well deserved. Such great dudes with great tunes.
When I first entered the venue, I must say I was a little surprised. The last few time I’ve seen Real Friends, it was all in bigger venues, and MTC is rather small. But as soon as the headliners hit the stage, I realized that the size of the place wouldn’t be a problem at all. The show’s atmosphere ended up being incredibly intimate with a lot of crowd interaction. As many knows, Real Friends postponed this tour; it was supposed to be in December. But the band was rather open about the reasoning behind the cancellation, needing some time to focus on themselves, especially their mental health. And during their show at MTC, the boys were just as open. Dan took a moment to discuss his battle with mental health, that he was now getting help, and that, that’s perfectly okay. Stating that getting help is not a sign of weakness, it takes courage, urging people to reach out if they need. As their set came to an end, the fan’s begged for another song, not letting Real Friends off the hook that easily. So with the intimate setting in mind, Real Friend’s allowed the fans to choose the closing song, taking requests. Unfortunately, my request for “I Think I’m Moving Forward,” one of my favorites, was decline by Dan. Instead, the band and the crowd soon agreed on “Sixteen,” which totally made up for it. Shortly after picking the song, we all had a good laugh as Dan confessed that he would have to look up the lyrics before they played it, proving the not everyone’s perfect, humanising the Lost Boy pop-punk giants. But that did not hinder the emotional performance of “Sixteen,” whatsoever. A beautiful set, with a sick line up. Another Real Friend’s tour for the books, they never disappoint.
