Bullet For My Valentine
« 1 of 21 »

Since 2006 Bullet For My Valentine has been invading the U.S. music scene with their debut album, The Poison. 10 years, and millions of record sales later, the boys from over seas still know how to capture the attention of thousands of people all stuffed into a sold out room. While BFMV sound nothing like the original British invaders [The Beatles], they realized it had been quite a few decades since the U.S. had had a proper invasion. Along for the ride were UK artists While She Sleeps and Asking Alexandria.

The night started heavy with rock metal band While She Sleeps. Being the lesser-known act of the three, this London based band had something to prove, and prove it they did. The crowd immediately picked up and were soon throwing themselves at both security and each other. While some of their songs caught my attention, the majority were a bit too heavy for my taste. Regardless of my opinion on their music, they did their job as an opener and amped up the crowd to incredible decibels.

The next band on this bill is more of a house hold name, especially amongst the younger fans within the scene, Asking Alexandria. I don’t recall the last time I saw Asking Alexandria or even paid attention to one of their sets, but that night I’m glad I did. Playing both new and old work, AA knew how to dominate the stage. While the whole crowd seemed to be more than happy with their performance, you could still easily pick out the fans that were more so there for Asking Alexandria over any other act.

Finally, the reason we were all gathered their, Bullet For My Valentine. It should be no surprise that these guys invaded with a vengeance. Like all incredible rock metal acts, BFMV came equipped with a double bass drum. The whole time I was there witnessing and capturing this remarkable moment, I couldn’t figure out for the life of me why I ever stopped listening to these guys. Bullet For My Valentine awakens something deep within you; and allows their audience to get lost within their music. It’s worth noting that Bullet is most definitely not “just that one song” [All These Things I Hate (Revolve Around Me)]. In fact the guys have been vocal about how they no longer enjoy playing that song much, which may explain why they chose to keep it off the set-list for their NYC date. While BFMV’s original drummer, Moose, regrettably was not apart of this tour, but we all wish him (and his wife) the best of luck because they are expecting their first child very soon. Kids can be just as crazy, intense and amazing as a rock show and we here at Babetalk wish them all the best. However, all wasn’t a total loss without Moose. One of the band’s very good buddies, and fantastic musician, Jason Bowld gladly stepped up to fill some big shoes. In order for him to do this frontman, Matthew Tuck, felt it was necessary to leave Jason alone with the crowd in order for us to get better acquainted. Matt and boys picked an incredible drummer and musician to fill in for Moose on this tour and we thank them for that.

By the end of the night my eyesight was blurred, my ears were ringing and my head still screamed the lyrics of these outstanding artists, and I wouldn’t want it any other way. For many of us we go to these shows to loose ourselves in the music. We want to forget about the day’s bullshit and just scream out lungs out. Bullet For My Valentine, Asking Alexandria and While She Sleeps have helped maintain an important genre within the music scene that literally allows us to scream our lungs out. All we can do now is wait and see what all these guys come up with next, and we couldn’t be more stoked.

Tonight Alive
« 1 of 25 »

Last October Set It Off announced that they would be joining Australian pop-punk band, Tonight Alive in their U.S. leg of their world tour. This co-headlining tour brought with them a blast from the past, The Ready Set, and new birds SayWeCanFly. I was lucky enough to catch the sold out show at NYC’s very own Irving Plaza.

First into the ring was SayWeCanFly. SayWeCanFly only officially consists of front-man Braden Barrie, yet Braden and his back up buds took to the stage hard and gave it everything they had. Their sound was your stereotypical 2005 “emo” pop-punk band. You can hear influences from The Ready Set, Death Cab for Cutie, and Cute Is What We Aim For. While their stage presence was lacking, that didn’t seem to bother the crowd as they sang back their lyrics. One of the great things about popular pop-punk acts going on tour together and hitting cities within close proximities of one another is that fans are more than likely to hit up multiple dates. This fact is great for newer acts because it gives the crowd a chance to learn the songs and enjoy the show more now being able to interact with each artist. For me, this band is a hit or miss. They have a decent sound but that sound quickly fades to white noise as its already been done between 2003-2008.

Next to fight for the stage was The Ready Set. The act has been around for years and we often forget that Jordan Witzigreuter is more than just “Love Like Woe”. His high energy, electropop sound quickly got their packed crowd moving. After seeing Jordan barely being able to fit all his energy on stage, you begin to wonder why this show wasn’t held at a much bigger venue with more room. Acts like The Ready Set know what they are doing on stage and need the room to breath. Watching Jordan try to contain his excitement to fit onto the too small stage made me think about how much more incredible this whole show could have been if the artists didn’t have to hold back so they wouldn’t fall into the crowd.

Finally it was time for the main event: Tonight Alive Vs. Set It Off. Tonight Alive got to the stage first and set the bar ever so high. Anyone that questions whether or not females should be apart of the pop-punk world need to watch Tonight Alive live and shut their mouth. Jenna is hands down my favorite female front-person. Her incredible vocals are met with such an impressive stage presence that each time I see Tonight Alive, there is no question that it will be an amazing show. Tonight Alive has gone from opening for The Story So Far and Man Overboard at a small Brooklyn venue without a barricade to Co-headlining a major tour and selling out a 1025 capacity venue. As people poured into the hall, fighting their way to witness this remarkable band, Jenna reminded us all that “the universe doesn’t make mistakes.” She let us know that “when you feel powerless, figure out what it is and change it.” Finally, she had us all chant “I always have a say, I always have a fucking say”. They played both old (“Listening” & “Amelia”) and new (“To Be Free & How Does it Feel?”) music; and of course a song that almost didn’t make it onto their latest record Limitless, “Drive.” After all that was said and done Tonight Alive proved why they are growing fast within the pop-punk world.

Now it was time for Set It Off to prove if they could hang with the artists from down under. It became very apparent that Irving Plaza’s small stage was simply not enough for front-man, Cody Carson. Carson spent much of his time in the crowd, to which no one complained. At one point the crowd got a little carried away, literally, with Cody as you heard him say, “Ok, let’s get me to the front real quick guys.” Throughout their set, the energy stayed consistently. The boys reminisced about the first show that they ever played in NYC. It was at Santos Party House, only 5 people came and the promoter left without paying them. For both Tonight Alive & Set It Off to go from such a small thing in the music scene, to each becoming great forces to be reckoned with is not only impressive but inspiring. Cody gave the crowd some advice on becoming whatever your heart desires; “tell those who question [and] put down your dreams to fuck off. Then prove them wrong with your actions”. Set It Off ended the night with their hits, “Swan Song” & “Why Worry.”

By the end of the night everyone there had rolled with the punches and was ready to start swinging in order to achieve their dreams. As far as who ‘won’ the verses (Tonight Alive or Set It Off), go check them out on The Fight For Something Tour, and decide for yourself; you’ll never get anywhere in life if you just allow people to make up your mind for you.

I have never really been a Chelsea Grin fan. That isn’t a bad thing on their part, they were just a band I never really bothered listening to when they were the top dogs in the metalcore/deathcore scene. Because of this, I honestly had no idea what to expect when they played Revolution in Amityville, New York March 6th on their Desolation Of Eden tour with Oceans Ate Alaska, Lorna Shore, and Wage War. I honestly still don’t know what to make of Chelsea Grin’s sound or live show, but it was certainly a memorable night.

Wage War, one of my current favorite bands in the metalcore scene, took the stage first. The crowd reaction during their set alone shows how much this band has connected with people on their debut album Blueprints. Their live set sounded massive, ready to be played in front of the thousands, just like that album. Although I was disappointed that the band did not play what was my favorite and in my opinion the biggest song off of the album “Twenty One,” most likely due to clean vocalist/guitarist Cody Quistad being ill, their set proved Wage War as a solid upcoming act to watch out for.

Up next was New Jersey deathcore band Lorna Shore. I was not too familiar with them before this show and although their set wasn’t the greatest, it was still an enjoyable watch. A highlight of the set had to be when Oceano frontman Adam Warren took to the stage with them to deliver some guest vocals. It was unexpected and the crowd loved it.

Oceans Ate Alaska is a band that is starting to grow on me. I wasn’t a huge fan of their Lost Isles record, but the two times I have seen them live they put on a rousing performance. Their set was even tighter than when I saw them with blessthefall last year. My only hope for OAA is that they can step it up on their next record, as they are some fantastic musicians when it comes to playing a live set.

Finally up was Chelsea Grin. Chelsea Grin’s performance was for the fans. I feel that I can’t give the best review of Chelsea Grin here, as this tour was specifically for the dedicated fans who have been following them since the beginning of their careers. The crowd truly seemed to appreciate everything Chelsea Grin played. Their music may not be for me, but I can highly respect a band that decided to give back to the fans with a tour like this.

Silverstein has been one of the most diverse bands in our scene for quite some time now. Their music borders on the lines of pop punk, metalcore, and everything in between. Because of this, the headlining tours that they organize are usually reflective on their diverse sound. Their recent headlining tour with Being As An Ocean, Emarosa, Coldrain, and Rarity reflects on this very well and provided an enjoyable night with much to offer the crowd watching on March 28th at Upstate Concert Hall in Clifton Park, New York.

First up was Canadian pop punk newcomers Rarity. A recent Rise Records signee, Rarity’s sound showcase pop punk elements with a post-hardcore twist that helped the band fit in with the rest of the lineup. Although the energy in the crowd was , as many didn’t seem to know who the band was, the energy Rarity showcase during their performance more than made up for it. Rarity is a band to watch ahead of the release of their new album I Couldn’t Be Weaker.

Next was Coldrain, a metalcore band who traveled all the way from Japan to . Their music borders the line between hard rock and metalcore, with some of their songs either incorporating one or both genres. The sound itself led to mixed results, as at times it seemed they were trying a little to hard to be Crown The Empire, but the people in the crowd loved the band and went wild for the few songs that they recognized.

Emarosa has become one of my favorite live acts to catch since I initially saw them on Warped Tour last year. Their stage prescence is very similar to letlive., if a comparison could be drawn to help visualize what . Signer Bradley Walden does giant leaps over the drums, gets piggy back rides from fans, and giving his guitarist a piggy back ride after flipping him over his shoulders without skipping a single beat. The fact that the music they perform comes from my favorite album of 2014 also helps. Emarosa was a big highlight of the night and I am very excited to see them again soon.

Being As An Ocean is a band I had initially liked when they released their debut album Dear G-d but fell out of shortly afterwards. Their following two albums just didn’t do it for me and I gave up on following them. Despite my feelings about their musical output, I can admit that Being As An Ocean life is a completely different animal. Joel Quartuccio is one of the most passionate frontmen I have seen perform in a live setting, completely erasing the crowd/barrier aspect of the show and giving an almost sermon like set in the crowd. The fans responded in equal awe and intensity. The crowd’s interaction and energy with Being As An Ocean showed why they are one of the best live bands around currently.

Underoath

Words and pictures by Sammy Odice

Three years ago we said goodbye to a beloved band who was highly respected within the scene. The boys of Underoath vowed they would never share a stage together under that name again. Fortunately for us, they lied. In August of 2015, the boys took to Facebook to announce their return to the stage as Underoath. With nearly every date sold out, it was safe to say we missed them. On April 14, 2016 I had to witness for myself this great rebirth.

Opening for a tour like this holds a lot of pressure over a musician. Though, I believe that Caspian handled it quite well. This 5-piece, all instrumental band would not be my first choice to open a show of this genre. While Caspian are highly respected throughout the rock world (and with good reason), they just didn’t seem to fit as an opener for Underoath. Their music is image inducing, almost like hearing the emotions of a great novel with no words. I cant help but feel like their music belongs in TV and movies, it would thrive there; but then again its also quite fulfilling when you just need some clean music without being cluttered with lyrics. They’ll continue to do great things and people will continue to listen.

For three years I had been kicking myself for not seeing Underoath on their farewell tour. After their break up tour, they walked off stage promising that they were done as Underoath. Yet, as the boys soon realized, all they needed was time. Time to grow as individuals and as musicians; time to heal old wounds and mend friendships; time to realize just how loved they were by so many people. After three long years there’s still only one word to describe them, incredible.

I’ve been able to see front-man Spencer perform with his other band, Sleepwave; and while they are equally remarkable in their different music styles, it’s hard not to notice how much more at home he looks performing in Underoath. Spencer mentioned his and his fellow bandmates’ appreciation to their fans by saying, “seeing as this show [has been] sold out for months, [I think] it’s safe to say you want us to come back.” He also showed some individual fan-love to a young man who has proudly seen Underoath perform live over 50 times and another woman who has seen them 35 times. Regardless if it was your first time seeing them live or your 47th time, it was a night that will be impossible to forget.

With the end of an era to the rebirth of a new beginning, you cannot deny the impact that Underoath has had all over the world and throughout the music scene. I have a feeling this won’t be the last of our beloved Underoath, to which I say, good.

August Burns Red
« 3 of 31 »

In March, metalcore band, August Burns Red took off on a month and a half long tour. Joining them were Between The Buried And Me and Good Tiger. I was able to catch the last night of this tour on Sunday, April 17 at Webster Hall in NYC.

Good Tiger opened the night. They have a post hardcore/rock sound to them, which was nice, up until the lead singer tried to be Mariah Carey. Everything would be going good, the crowd would be into it, and then out of nowhere this high pitched screech would come out of this guys mouth. While this band wasn’t afraid to perform perhaps they should pull back the unnecessary Ariana Grande shout out.

Between the Buried and Me was next on the bill and they were, interesting. I’ve never really seen a metal act that uses keys throughout their set, and uses them well. The ballot-like moments were a nice break in-between all the heaviness.  Yet the most impressive part of their set came from lead guitarist, Paul Waggoner. His solos are quite rock god and definitely turn a head.

If you’ve never seen August Burns Red, go. Go see them every time. They are a good time to watch on Warped Tour but when it’s their own headlining, it’s a completely different, but equally wonderful, feel. Like every other metalcore musical act, they came equipped with a double bass drum. Lead singer Jake Luhrs is one of the most entertaining and theatrical individuals I’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing live. There’s a stigma attached to this music scene that the members have to constantly have this hard attitude about them, yet here’s Jake dancing to a junky country beat, it’s fantastic.

There’s something about seeing a show of this caliber that awakens something deep inside you and the only way to get it out is to rage and go buck wild. With wickedly crazy emotions barreling out of you at these shows, many expect violence but it’s quite the opposite. Nearly everyone at these shows has one common goal, to have a good god damn time. Sure there are some douchebags that go to just hurt people but those individuals usually get taken care of early into the night. The point is, music scenes like this one are a community. We take care of each other to ensure a good time for all. The music may sound violent but that’s just to get all the negativity out of our bodies. We care about this music and we care about each other, and at each show I go to these points become truer and more obvious. So to everyone at every show, take care of each other out there, take care of our music, and have a good fucking time.

Good Charlotte
« 1 of 29 »

Over the past six years we have been wishing and hoping that Good Charlotte would make a come back, after all we never really got to say goodbye. Our spirits lifted at the promise of new music. And then everyone lost their God damned minds when four East Coast tour dates were announced; Pilly, Washington D.C., Boston and of course, New York City.

Needless to say, every show sold out in a matter of minutes. On April 21st, at Webster Hall, I was able to cover the NYC date and release my inner emo/punk kid.

Opening up one of the most anticipated tours put a lot of pressure on the young underdogs of Waterparks; but I think they handled it well. Much to their surprised a group of fans took it upon themselves to make Waterparks their very own sign in the sea of Good Charlotte signs. They sound like a mix of All Time Low and State Champs with a drizzle of 5 Seconds of Summer and a dash of The Story So Far. As long as they do something that separates them from the rest, they will go far.

Finally, after more than half a decade of waiting, it was time to bare witness to the return of one of the most influential, rebellious pop-punk groups of our youth, Good Charlotte. Much to the crowd’s delight, their setlist was filled with a lot of the classic the Good Charlotte songs we know and love; such as, The Anthem, Boys & Girls, Riot Girl and of course, East Coast Anthem.

As the crowd sang back the lyrics of Little Things, Joel stopped half way through to express, “Hold on, ‘cause that just tripped me up. We wrote that in ’96. We didn’t think you’d know that one.” All I could think was how GC was so many of ours first obsession, the first CD we ever bought with our allowance or our first concert, you don’t just forget a classic Good Charlotte song. Joel expressed the band’s gratitude to their fans saying, “We know that without you guys listening to our music, we aren’t shit.” It’s always nice to know that regardless of how big some of these bands we love get, they remember who they are. They ended the night with I Just Wanna Live and Lifestyles of The Rich and Famous.

They broke through the music scene and let us ‘weird’ kids know that it was ok to be weird. They gave us some of the most iconic songs, and videos to go along with them.  They reminded us to be different and enjoy what we wanted, regardless of the societal norm. They left in silence but returned louder than ever. So as Joel said at the end of each show, we’ll see you in the fall.

The Used
« 1 of 34 »

15 years ago we were introduced to a band that help start the generation of emo rock/post hardcore rock music, The Used. To honor the 2 most recognized albums by The Used, they decided to tour across the country giving each city they hit two nights of music from their fans’ youth. Night one featured their self title debut album from start to finish and night two was In Love and Death. On April 27 I was able to hit up the second night of their NYC dates at PlayStation Theater.

Opening up for this incredible, sold out night was The New Regime. Officially only consisting of Ilan Rubin, he was joined by 2 other fantastic musicians.  Ilan is like a musical/style baby of Ray Toro (My Chemical Romance) and Slash (Guns and Roses). Though part of my biased heart wished it were Ray or Slash, Ilan did not disappoint by any means. His stage presence was theatrical and fun which made listening to their easy going alternative rock music all the most enjoyable to watch and listen to. With Ilan leading the way, The New Regime is a name to remember.

This year has been a big year for the emo kids of the early 2000s, we got a reunion from our beloved Underoath and Good Charlotte; which made our insides shake from excitement. Our emo hearts nearly exploded at announcement of The Used 15 year tour and now, the night was finally here. An album that helped a lot of angst filled teens understand what was going on inside their heads and an album that honored someone very special to front-man, Bert McCracken. The memory of a girl, who showed Bert human love and his love for heroin, tragically overdosed while the album was in production. To honor her, he and fellow bandmates felt it appropriate to name the album In Love & Death.

First off the production of show was absolutely incredible, having a giant signature The Used heart that pulsed. Since Bert’s sobriety, it seems he’s really gained a new appreciation for life and he reminds us all to never take anything for granted; with wise words of “If you live for yesterday we’re wasting our fucking time today” and “Everyone shut your eyes and remember this night for the rest of your fucking lives, alright?”

The night was filled with nostalgia, laughs, smiles but most importantly, loves. A love for a music scene that shaped who a lot of us are, a music scene that helped many of us, including myself, through some of the roughest times of our lives. Towards the end of the show Bert had the crowd open up in preparation for a “wall of death” (because no Used show would be complete without it), but in light of everything it was a “wall of love”. Bert ran the ‘rules by us’, “when we take off, love and hug each other….and kick the shit out of each other”, and the crowd gladly complied.

Over the past 15 years we’ve been able to experience a band that let us know that we are not alone in this life; that the feelings and emotions we have aren’t something to be ashamed of and that its ok to just scream sometimes. We love The Used and everything they’ve given us in the past and will continue to give us in the future.

NoFX
« 1 of 35 »

If you’re into punk music, you’ve heard of NOFX. They’ve been around for nearly three decades and as the years go on, they give less fucks than before, which makes for a damn good show. This time around they set off on The Hepatitis Bathtub Tour (plus book signing). With these loud, crude, unapologetic punk artists were Mephiskapheles and Direct Hit. I hit up the NYC date on April 29 at the famous Irving Plaza.

Mephiskapheles broke out the night with some classic ska-punk. Like many ska bands, there’s a lot of them, 7 members actually. This 7 piece band got everyone’s energy up and had some classic punk song titles; like “Satan Sold My Weed”.

Next in this night of punk was Direct Hit. With everyone’s blood pumping from Mephiskapheles, it came as no surprise that the crowd quickly opened up into a circle pit. These guys have an incredible stage presence. Both acts definitely need more recognition throughout the scene; they’ve proved why they deserve to be on that stage with punk legends, NoFX.

Now it was time for NoFX. Where do I even start? Well, it wasn’t boring. Fat Mike came out in a cute little floral number with matching bottoms. Besides them insulting the crowd (which is something all NoFX fans truly do look forward to), they are geniuses when it comes to making up songs on the spot; tonight’s special tune was “Happy Birthday Jew Girl”. They closed out the show with their hit song, “Kill All The White Man”. But the night didn’t end there; the band and crew danced and lip-synced to the musical number “Everyone’s A Little Bit Raciest” from award winning Broadway show, Avenue Q (you can currently it catch off Broadway at the World’s Theater in NYC, and if you enjoy the humor of a NoFX show, you’ll definitely enjoy this show).
If you’ve never been to a NoFX show, well, here’s the low down. 1) They don’t give a fuck and always try to push the limits 2) They are crude and offensive on purpose 3) They are not hateful people nor do they promote hate, they are actually quite nice guys; those are the basics, I’ll let you figure the rest out on your own.

On May 16th I caught a diverse group of acts at The Mercury Lounge in New York City.

First up was Stacked Like Pancakes, a ska band out of Boston who was playing NYC for the first tim ever. They really got the crowd moving playing some covers of new and classic song like Twenty One Pilots’ “Stressed Out” and Blink 182’s “Dammit” and as they said “Letting there balls hang out and I hope my mother don’t hear this, they played their own song,” Shit Fuck Damn It Damn It” and got the crowd singing and moshing.

Next to take the stage was Alexa Wilding. Playing songs from her new EP Wolves that comes out on July 8th, Alexa is a singer/song writer out of New York who sounds like Alanis Morissette with a cosmic acoustic twist. One of her new songs “Danger” give you a feel of a old western movie as the cowboy rides off in to the sunset.

After her was SHAED and Electric pop group who has the Sound Of Lights that meets the vocal style of Ellie Goulding.

Finally the last act of the night was Domino Kirke. Another Artist out of New York. she is more on the lines of pop rock. All her songs are filled with emotion and it really shows when she is up there performing. Although I am not as familiar with this kind of music, all of the artists on the line up are great and I hope to see them grow as the future comes.

The Summer Set
« 3 of 27 »

9 years ago we were introduced to this not-quite pop/not-quite punk band, The Summer Set. They set out on a headlining tour with an interesting group of artist. I caught the NYC date on May 27 at Irving Plaza. Joining them was solo act, Karizma, 5-piece Royal Teeth and Handsome Ghost.

First into the night was 21 year-old, Karizma. His energy is electric and his sound is one that’s been popping up more over the past few years. He’s similar to artists like Mod Sun, Travis Mills (T. Mills) and Black Bear with some inspiration from Eminem. You can see his younger attitude and mind set within some of his lyrics, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing; it more so means that he has growing to do within himself and within the music industry (just as any young artist). His music is fun and he’s a light-hearted personality, so long as he maintains a strong level head, he won’t loose that during his development.

Royal Teeth were next; personally, I’ve never heard of them before but holy hell, are this fantastic. They are a 5-pierce act with both a male and female singer, which makes for a more diverse sound. They are within the same vibe of The Summer Set with a mix of We Are The In Crowd and Echo Smith. Their stage presence is fantastic, yet I wish the other 3 members who aren’t on vocals would get more within the spot light, granted they were on a smaller stage.

Handsome Ghost was the final opener. Their sound is super laid back and easy listening. They blend acoustic guitar with keys, a soundboard and both classic and electric drums. Using these new and familiar mediums to produce music makes for a more rounded sound.

Finally, The Summer Set took the stage and the crowd was all too ready. They opened up the set with one of their latest singles, Figure Me Out and took off from there. Their energy is explosive on all levels and from all members. TSS played some of their newer songs (Boomerang & All My Friends), as well as some of their classics (The Boys You Do & Chelsea). I need to express how amazing a musician Jess is. She is one of the best drummers I’ve had the pleasure of seeing live. And in an industry so overly dominated by men, it’s refreshing to see strong female musicians dropping jaws and showing everyone why music is genderless.

Lead-singer, Brian expressed their gratitude for the incredible support of their fans over the years saying, “Thank you for being apart of the last 9 years and thank you for being apart of the next 9 years.” He also reminded everyone there to enjoy the night and not from behind a screen by adding, “Everyone take your phones out and put those lights on. *(There was slight hesitation from the crowd)* NYC its 2016, everyone has a phone *(Everyone pulls out their phone)* Now put your phones away! You don’t need it here!”

We go to these shows to escape out daily lives, to enjoy a night with people with the same taste in music, to watch musicians we look up to do what they do best, perform. Put down the phones and create the memory.

We’ve had the pleasure of seeing The Summer Set grow as musicians and as individuals over the last 9 years and to say we are excited to see what the next 9 years brings is an understatement. So long as there are those willing to listen to these fantastic musicians, they will always have a place in this industry.

Marianas Trench
« 1 of 34 »

Canada has become known for giving us some of the most influential musicians and artists, from Drake and Justin Bieber to Avril Lavigne and Sum 41. So it should come as no surprise that Canadian natives, Marianas Trench, are starting to turn some serious heads in the U.S. I was able to catch their NYC show of their SPF 80s Tour at PlayStation Theater on July 26. Joining them were Wyland and Skylar Stecker.

Wyland took the stage first with a musical blend of Dashboard Confessional and Jack’s Mannequin with a twang of The Summer Set and One Republic. Some of the songs and styles were a bit too similar to the legendary Jack’s Mannequin & Dashboard Confessional, which made them pretty forgettable musically. As far as stage performance, it was lacking, though the lead singer did try to get more crowd interaction by jumping down into the pit.  The crowd seemed to be bopping their heads along to the music but other than that there really wasn’t much a crowd reaction.

Next was solo artist Skylar Stecker. This girl may only be 14 years old but she certainly doesn’t sing like she’s 14. Her voice is incredibly strong, not only for someone her age, but for a singer in general. She has obvious musical influences from Ariana Grande and Rhianna with a drizzle of Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears. Vocally, this girl is gifted; although some of the words when she sings (especially live) become blended together but all that means is she’s still training and learning how to control her very powerful voice. Lyrically, she needs some work. Many of her songs seems to be the same tired themes that of the pop world (however they are quite catchy). As she grows as an individual and artist, she will start to develop her lyrics more and [hopefully] they will be more true to who she is, rather than being labeled “another pop artist”. As far as stage presence goes, she needs to figure out what style works best for her music and for her as an artist. For the NYC date she chose to do an acoustic set, which highlighted her vocal skills but made it hard for the crowd to interact with her and her music. Lighting, possible back up dancers or even a full band can truly help her shine in front of an audience. I’m truly excited to see what the future holds for this young artist. She has the raw talent, now she just needs to surround herself with the right team to unsure the proper growth for her career.

Finally it was time for Marianas Trench. Since the boys of Marianas Trench have already taken over Canada, their next big step to taking over the world was a full U.S. tour. They mentioned that the last time that they were on PlayStation’s stage was opening up for another Canadian band and generation defining artists, Simple Plan. This time around, though, it was their turn to headline on one of NYC’s bigger stages. Marianas Trench is going to have a similar career growth like that of Tonight Alive (another beloved international band). Within a few short months MT will go from “yea, I think I might have heard of them”, to headlining festivals.

Even though PlayStation wasn’t sold out, you would have never have known with the crowd reaction. Josh Ramsey is one of the most theatrical performers I’ve ever seen live. The amount of energy that comes off of this guy makes you wonder if there’s even a big enough stage to contain him. What’s great about Josh is that his energy rubs off onto the other members and makes them just as enjoyable to watch. Marianas Trench is one of those bands were each member helps each other shine. While Josh undoubtedly has the most energy, he by no means over shadows the rest of the guys. Each member has their own unique vibe and style while performing but when Josh starts to blend his style with theirs, it creates this whole new entity that is just incredible to witness. Marianas Trench has been growing in popularity at a steady rate over the years, but something tells me that within the coming months their music career is going to explode.

The amount of talent that is on this tour is jaw dropping. To be able to witness true artists and true performers is something everyone should experience within their lifetime. I highly recommend you catch this tour when it passes through your city.
